{"id":273,"date":"2015-06-09T18:58:28","date_gmt":"2015-06-09T18:58:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/3d.rayharwood.com\/?p=273"},"modified":"2015-06-09T19:34:22","modified_gmt":"2015-06-09T19:34:22","slug":"4-print-of-lifecasting-model-scanned-to-stl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/3d.rayharwood.com\/?p=273","title":{"rendered":"4&#8243; Print of Lifecasting Model Scanned to STL"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In my <a href=\"http:\/\/3d.rayharwood.com\/?p=267\">previous post<\/a> (read it for more details on the artist and his studio), I displayed a picture of the 2 inch\u00a0print of an STL file I received from &#8220;Gullwing&#8221;, the artist at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imagesindepth.com\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\">Images in Depth\/Lifecast Arizona<\/a>. Here you see a deconstructed 4 inch\u00a0print (left)\u00a0along with the removed support material (right).<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Since the print is larger, it seems to be slightly thicker, as you might expect.\u00a0 And I tweaked <a href=\"http:\/\/slic3r.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Slic3r<\/a>&#8216;s settings\u00a0in an effort to\u00a0make the support material easier to remove &#8211; which seems to have been successful.<\/p>\n<h1>Slic3r Settings<\/h1>\n<p>I started with the &#8220;fast-PLA-pt35noz-pt28layer&#8221; settings file provided by Aleph Objects (maker of the Lulzbot TAZ4 I own), but made the following changes on the Print Settings tab:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Infill menu\n<ul>\n<li>Fill density: 40%<\/li>\n<li>Fill pattern: line<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Skirt and Brim menu\n<ul>\n<li>Brim width: 2mm<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Support Material menu\n<ul>\n<li>Generate Support Material &#8211; checked<\/li>\n<li>Enforce support for the first 2 layers<\/li>\n<li>Pattern: rectilinear grid<\/li>\n<li>Interface layers: 2<\/li>\n<li>Interface pattern spacing: 2mm<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1>Lulzbot TAZ 4 &amp; Material<\/h1>\n<p>I printed with <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/kliment\/Printrun\" target=\"_blank\">Printrun\/Pronterface<\/a> using 3mm clear\/natural PLA, with an extruder temperature of 200C and bed temperature of 70C directly to the Kapton surface.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve learned with experience &#8211; especially here in Arizona where it&#8217;s very dusty &#8211; to clean the Kapton everyone morning before printing, usually with a little denatured alcohol (I&#8217;ve been using 15%) and a cotton ball or a lint-free wipe such as Kimtech (also used in my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upcloseimagery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Up Close Imagery<\/a> microscope pictures).<\/p>\n<p>Printrun estimated a usage of 1622 mm of filament and 55m 36s to print, and the actual print time was 1h 7m 13s.<\/p>\n<h1>Coming Up&#8230;<\/h1>\n<p>I&#8217;ve ordered the <a href=\"http:\/\/structure.io\/\" target=\"_blank\">Structure Sensor<\/a> which should arrive today, and I&#8217;ve already had discussions with Gullwing about coming back by his studio and doing my own 3D scan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In my previous post (read it for more details on the artist and his studio), I displayed a picture of the 2 inch\u00a0print of an STL file I received from &#8220;Gullwing&#8221;, the artist at Images in Depth\/Lifecast Arizona.
